Llandrindod Wells Golf Club,
which marks its centenary in 2005, got its celebrations off to a magnificent start
by winning the main award in the Welsh Golf Club of the Year presentations at
the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff.
Llandrindod progressed from winning the
junior category last year to picking up the main prize and a cheque for £5,000.
The club also took the Business and Communication category and another prize of
£1,000.
John Jermaine, the chairman of the Ryder Cup Company (Wales),
outlined the magnificent contribution Llandrindod Wells had made to making golf
accessible to the community through its many initiatives, including taking tri-golf
into local schools and offering affordable packages for beginners.
Club
chairman Mal Thomas said: “Attending last year’s inaugural awards
was inspirational for us and led to the club embarking on a number of developments
costing well in excess of £400,000, including a new floodlit driving range
and major rebuild of our locker and changing facilities.
“This
will ensure the club is well placed to provide a quality service to golfers in
the 21st century.”
Mr Thomas thanked the Welsh Golfing Union and
sponsors Towergate Leisure Underwriting for promoting the competition, and added:
"Golf in Wales is going through a most exciting phase, with the award of the Ryder
Cup and the development of a National Golf Strategy.
"This competition
complements both these initiatives and helps clubs plan, and realise, their aspirations
to provide better facilities to members and visitors alike”.
“We’re
essentially a community club” said secretary Robert Southcott. “The
driving range is open to everyone, we offer beginners packages from £60.
